Your Fitness Journey – Tips for Getting Fit and Staying Healthy
Whether you’re getting back into it or starting for the first time, beginning a new fitness journey can be a lot to tackle. Once you’ve decided to make a life change, the hardest, and often scariest, part is just getting started. So let’s get started with tips to help you get started.
1 – Commit to Yourself, For Yourself
Making a change, no matter what kind of change, ultimately comes down to you. You have to be the one who makes the commitment. Doing it for any other reason that for yourself can lead to losing motivation later. Once you’ve decided to do it, the best thing you can do for your health and fitness is to stay consistent. Commit to consistency as much as to the change itself. You’ll be much more likely to find balance in your new lifestyle that way.
2 – Keep Moving
This one is two-fold. Building from our first tip, staying consistent will help you build momentum to keep it up! This isn’t to say that it’s wrong to slow down or take a break if you need to. It’s more about sticking to your commitment to move forward. It also comes down to the fact that healthy habits start with physical movement as well. Whether that’s picking up a more cardio-heavy routine or just adding a walk into your daily routine, it’s a good habit to have!
3 – Change Takes Time
Change is hard. Sometimes, it can seem out of your reach entirely. You have to recognize – and prepare yourself – for the fact that any big life change takes time. It isn’t going to happen overnight and it will certainly take hard work. Don’t get discouraged if you aren’t immediately seeing the results you want. Keep at it and remain committed and you will get there.
4 – Pick Changes You Can Live With
This is absolutely a must when planning out healthy lifestyle changes. As we said, seeing the results of your hard work takes time. Don’t start with something you dread doing; it’s not going to be fun for you and it’s not going to encourage you to keep going. Work out a game plan that you can follow and that you will enjoy doing.
5 – You Can’t Out-Exercise a Bad Diet
You can work out to exhaustion every day and still not see the changes in your body you want. Your eating habits are just as important as the time you spend in the gym. Diet is more than just counting calories (though that can be helpful depending on your goals). It comes down to what you put in your body, too. If you have bad eating habits (too much sugar, starch, or processed foods), you are going to struggle a lot more to reach your health goals.
6 – Health is More Than the Gym
There’s more to health and fitness than spending time at the gym. You have to look beyond exercise and take care of yourself, too. This can take a lot of forms. Many of them are obvious: stay hydrated, stick to a healthy diet, and make sure you’re practicing good form and technique if your exercise. There are the less obvious ones too and sometimes, those matter even more. Make sure you’re practicing good selfcare on your journey.
After all, at the end of the day your happiness is the ultimate goal.
